How I Cracked 3 Paid Internships from a Tier-3 College: My Proven 5-Step Strategy

Getting an internship from a Tier-3 college isn’t easy. Companies rarely visit your campus, and most students feel stuck waiting for opportunities that never come. But here’s the good news: you can create your own opportunities.

I’m sharing the exact 5-step strategy I used to land 3 paid internships during my 3rd year, even though I studied in a Tier-3 college. If I can do it, you can too!


Step 1: Learn Development – Skills Speak Louder Than DSA Here

If you’re in a Tier-3 college, companies won’t come looking for you—you have to go to them. And when you do, they’ll ask one question:

“What can you build for us?”

That’s why you must focus on development skills:

  • Web Development (React, Node.js, Express)
  • Mobile Development (Flutter, React Native)
  • Backend & APIs
  • Basic DevOps or Cloud (if possible)

Why not just DSA? DSA is great if you’re targeting big companies like Google or Amazon. But if you want real-world internships in startups or small firms, development + projects matter the most.


Step 2: Build a Strong Resume & LinkedIn Profile

Your resume should be short, clean, and filled with projects:

  • Add 2–3 solid projects (host them on GitHub & deploy online).
  • Highlight skills that matter (React, Node.js, MongoDB, etc.).
  • Avoid fake experiences—real projects impress more than fake internships.

LinkedIn is your online portfolio.

  • Announce your projects: “Just built an expense tracker using React & Node.js.”
  • Share your learning journey.
  • Connect with professionals and alumni from your college.

Step 3: Start with Startups

Don’t wait for MNCs to hire you—they often need referrals and strong networks. Instead:

  • Apply to early-stage startups where skills matter more than college name.
  • Many startups offer remote internships, which is a big advantage.

Pro Tip: Some startups may not pay initially. If you can, work for free for 1-2 months to build experience. Most unpaid roles convert to paid if you perform well.


Step 4: Apply Everywhere – Even 100+ Applications

You won’t get an internship by applying to just 5 companies. Play the numbers game:

  • Use Internshala, AngelList, LinkedIn Jobs, Unstop.
  • Apply to 100+ openings if needed.
  • Send cold emails to companies. A simple pitch like:

Hi [Name], I’m a B.Tech CSE student skilled in React & Node.js. I love your work on [specific product]. If you have any internship opportunities, I’d love to contribute. Here’s my GitHub & resume: [links]


Step 5: Keep Improving

  • Learn new frameworks.
  • Refine your projects.
  • Update your resume and LinkedIn every time you add something new.

The market changes fast—so should you.

Tier-3 colleges don’t define your future—you do. By focusing on skills, projects, visibility, and persistence, you can land amazing internships and build a strong foundation for your career.
